From Proto-Lolo-Burmese *m-dzəw² (“ruler, lord, emperor”), from Proto-Tibeto-Burman *m-dzəw (“chief, master, lord”). Cognate with Tangut (dzju, “ruler, lord, emperor”) (STEDT); Luce additionally gives Old Chinese 主 (OC *tjoʔ, “lord”) as a cognate.[1]
