တန်း

Etymology disputed; candidate roots include Proto-Sino-Tibetan *t(r)waŋ (“straight; straighten”), Proto-Sino-Tibetan *m-tjak/ŋ ~ tik/ŋ (“good; very; real; straight”), and Proto-Sino-Tibetan *l-(t/d)jam (“to fill, flat”). Compare also with Old Chinese 正 (OC *tjeŋ, *tjeŋs, “upright”).

The "form, class, grade" sense is considered equivalent with the "straight" sense by MED, and neither STEDT nor Luce 1981 mention this sense. That said, note similarities to 段 (OC *doːns, “section; grade, level”) for the "class, grade" sense.
