Etymology 1

From Proto-Tibeto-Burman *m/s-naːy (to twist, knead, soften); cognate with Jingpho (mə nai, to twist) (STEDT). The root seems to be related to Proto-Tibeto-Burman *s/ʔ-n(w)ay (cohesive, sticky, elastic), whence Jingpho (ʔnāi, sticky, adhesive, pliable; elastic). Note also similarities to Old Chinese (OC *niːɡ, “to pinch, knead”).
