Burmese
Etymology
Treated as atomic by MED, and not mentioned by STEDT. Component-wise, analyzable as ပု (pu., “uncertain prefix”) + ဆိုး (hcui:, “to dye, stain (dyed cloth)”).
Regarding the identity of the first component, ပု (pu.) is often a shortened form of ပိုး (pui:, “worm, silk”) as in ပုရွက် (pu.rwak) and ပုစဉ်း (pu.cany:). The 'silk' sense might be reflected better in the Old Burmese coordinate term ပုခြည် (pu.hkrany, “a type of tunic or fabric worn during the Bagan period”).[1] Otherwise, it may have been an anatomical indicator; as in ပုဆစ် (pu.hcac, “knee”).
Some traditional Burmologists derive the second component from ဆီး (hci:, “to wear, to bar”) so as to match the semantic development of ထဘီ (hta.bhi); however, this is unlikely.[2]
