Etymology

This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium. Particularly: “Not given etymology by STEDT (pôŋ "arched covering or roof"; "weeds, shrubs, bushes"; "collect and unite in one; put on turban; sun"; "bake in oven, steam"). MED considers all senses to be related; if so, then perhaps something like "canopy" > "gathering event under a canopy" > "mix, associate, marry" and so. The "steam" sense seems like a stretch to be related to the others, though. Luce 1981 separates these senses into "to steam, bake", "bush, thicket", "to collect in one; total", and "companion; associate", and adduces no cognates for any of them.[1]
That said, note similarities to Old Chinese 逢 (OC *boŋ, “to meet, encounter”).”
