Burmese
Pronunciation
Etymology 1
STEDT gives no etymology (prañ "country"). Luce adduces Old Chinese 邦 (OC *proːŋ, “nation, sovereign state”) as a cognate.[1] While Wang 1982 and Schuessler 2007 take the Chinese term as a derivative of 封 (OC *poŋ, *poŋs, “border, wrapper; to close”), which may or may not be related, Luce's theory seems to be a virtually exact match. This is thought (per Marc Miyake, etc.) to be a Pyu loanword (which probably doesn't change the analysis).
