Burmese
Etymology
Inherited from Old Burmese မ္လိယ် (mliy), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *mlij,[1] *m-l(e/ə)j (“earth, country, ground, mud, soil”). Cognate with Akha (mí, “earth”), Old Chinese 地 (OC *l'els, “ground, earth”) (STEDT, Hill 2019). The traditional comparison with Old Chinese 室 (OC *hliɡ, “room, dwelling”)[2] is phonetically unconvincing, based on Old Chinese reconstructions.
