Perhaps from a Proto-Lolo-Burmese *ʔ-mun¹/³ (“powder”). Cognate with Black Lahu (məy ~ mə, “powder, gunpowder”), as well as perhaps Proto-Tani *mɯk (“powder”) (STEDT). Outside of Lolo-Burmese Luce also adduces Old Chinese 粉 (OC *pɯnʔ, “powder”) and Tibetan བུད་ (bud, “cloud of dust”) as cognate, though this may be outdated.[1]
