Pronunciation

Etymology 1

From Proto-Tibeto-Burman *g-raːl ~ *g-ran ~ *ray (enemy, fight, quarrel, strife, sword, war). Cognate with Mizo (ráal, enemy, the foe (in warfare)), Tibetan (ḥgran-pa, to fight, contend with), རལ་གྲི (ral gri, sword, dagger). Said Tibeto-Burman root is likely related to Proto-Sino-Tibetan *d-gra (stranger, enemy), whence Tibetan དགྲ (dgra, enemy) and Old Chinese (OC *ɡ·raʔ, “guest, stranger, traveler; to travel, lodge”) (STEDT).
