ဝမ်း

Etymology

From Proto-Tibeto-Burman *pʷam (belly, stomach, waist), which appears to be related to Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-bʷam ~ s-bʷap (to swell; swollen, fat, thick; rounded part, mountain, hill) (STEDT). Cognate with Jingpho (pù-hpam, stomach), as well as, according to Luce, Old Chinese (OC *bomʔ, “mold; pattern”);[1] a more distant cognate from *s-bʷa(m/p) is Old Chinese (OC *pʰaːns, “fat (adjective)”).
