Cognate with Tibetan བཤུད (bshud, to wipe), Old Chinese (OC *sroːd, *srod, “to rub; brush”)[1] (though STEDT mistakenly puts down (OC *sqʰʷiɡ, “to sympathize, compensate”) for the Chinese character instead).
