From Proto-Georgian-Zan *b(ɣ)u-,[1] which is perhaps related to Proto-Kartvelian *ɣu-.[2] Ultimately of onomatopoeic origin, for which compare Old Armenian բու (bu), Proto-Northeast Caucasian *bŭhu (whence Chechen бухӏа (buha), Ingush бов (bov)), Latin bubo, Arabic بومة (būm) and Persian بوف (buf).
