From *კვილ-ა (*ḳvil-a), from Proto-Kartvelian *ḳwil-. Cognate with Laz კული (ǩuli, chair), Svan კუ̂ილ (ḳûil, block of wood, tree stump; stool), and possibly dialectal Georgian კვილო (ḳvilo, small block of wood, tree stump).

According to Klimov, from a Northeast Caucasian source. Compare Tsez къуӏри (q’uʿri, bench), Hinukh къуре (q’ure), Dargwa уркьули (urq̇uli, board), for which Starostin-Nikolayev reconstructs Proto-Northeast Caucasian *q̇wǝ̆lʔă.
