Etymology

From *კვილ-ი (*ǩvil-i), from Proto-Kartvelian *ḳwil-.[1][2] Cognate with Mingrelian კველა (ḳvela, stool, seat), Svan კუ̂ილ (ḳûil, block of wood, tree stump; stool), and possibly dialectal Georgian კვილო (ḳvilo, small block of wood, tree stump).

According to Klimov, from a Proto-Northeast Caucasian source.[3] Compare Tsez къуӏри (q’uʿri, bench), Hinukh къуре (q’ure), Dargwa уркьули (urq̇uli, board), for which Starostin reconstructs Proto-Northeast Caucasian *q̇wǝ̆lʔă.[4]
