From Proto-Georgian-Zan *lez₁w-. Cognate with Mingrelian ლეჟვა (ležva) and Laz ლეჟვერა (lejvera).

Ačaṙean derives from Old Armenian լիզեմ (lizem, to lick) (root *լէզ- (*lēz-)), but Klimov remarks that the connection with Armenian is “difficult to accept”.
