Georgian

Etymology

From Arabic جَهَنَّمَ (jahannama), genitive of Arabic جَهَنَّم (jahannam, hell). Shanidze explains the change as follows: *ჯაჰანნამა (*ǯahannama) > *ჯაჰანდაბა (*ǯahandaba) > *ჯაანდაბა (*ǯaandaba) > ჯანდაბა (ǯandaba), with changes (m) > (b), (h) loss before a vowel and the fact that two consonants of the same class (ნ, რ, ლ) cannot create consonant clusters with each other in words, thus the change *ნნ > ნდ (cf. განსპეტაკნების (gansṗeṭaḳnebis) but განმწუანდების (ganmc̣uandebis)). Compare also Armenian ջանդամ (ǰandam).
