From ọ̀san + yìn, of unclear origin. A few etymological theories exist:
An origin myth of Ọ̀sanyìn attributes it from the phrase ẹ̀sanẹyìn(“the reward for palm nuts”). A similar myth is repeated in the Odù Ifá chapter Ọ̀sẹ́ Ọ̀wọ́nrín (#232), where the name is said to come from the phrase ẹ̀sánẹyìn(“the 9 palm nuts”).
