A loanword from an eastern language,[1] likely utimately borrowed from Old Tamil 𑀅𑀓𑀺𑀮𑁰 (akil), from the same source as Arabic يَلَنْجُوج (yalanjūj), يَلَنْجَج (yalanjaj), يَلَنْجِيج (yalanjīj), أَلَنْجُوج (ʔalanjūj), أَلَنْجَج (ʔalanjaj), Biblical Hebrew אֲהָלִים (ʾăhālîm); compare அகில் (akil, “agarwood”).[2][3]
