From ἆθλος (âthlos, “contest, struggle”) or ἆθλον (âthlon, “prize, contest”) + -έω (-éō, “verbal suffix”). In the Attic form ᾱ̓θλῶ (āthlô), ᾰε (ăe) is contracted to ᾱ (ā).
