Ancient Greek

Etymology

Unknown. The analysis as a compound of privative ἀ- (a-) and an s-stem *τρέκος (*trékos), in the sense undistorted, finds no further support: connection with the root of Latin torqueō (to twist, wind, wry) is impossible, because a reflex of the labiovelar would be lacking.
