     日(に)本(ほん)ではこうした筋(すじ)を通(とお)すという思(し)想(そう)は、義(ぎ)理(り)と人(にん)情(じょう)という形(かた)で古(ふる)くから親(した)しまれてきました。

     Nihon de wa kō shita suji o tōsu to iu shisō wa, giri to ninjō to iu kata de furuku kara shitashimarete-kimashita.

     In Japan this ideology of propriety has long been widely known in the forms of giri and ninjō (duty and empathy).

     Suji o tōsu shōbun no Tao wa, hachi-san-nen ni senshu kaichō ni naru to furonto ni mo enryonaku mono o itta.

     Always the sort to do what is right, when Tao became president of the players’ association in ’83 he did not hesitate to speak frankly with the front office.
