Etymology
From Old Japanese. First cited to the Man'yōshū of 759.[1]
Apparently a shift from 立ち待ち (tachimachi, “standing and waiting”), the 連用形 (ren'yōkei, “continuative or stem form”) of compound verb 立ち待つ (tachimatsu, “to wait while standing”),[1][2][3] probably from the idea of being at the ready. In older texts, this was always followed by the adverbial particle に (ni) for all senses.[1]
