Etymology

The character with a handakuten.

Pronunciation

Syllable

つ゚ (romaji tu)

  1. (nonstandard, obsolete) The hiragana syllable つ゚ (tu). Its equivalent in katakana is ツ゚ (tu).

Usage notes

This character is a borrowing from the Ainu syllable ツ゚, and is not included in JIS X 0213. However, in Christian materials and literary texts, examples of the Latin syllables /tu/ and /du/ being transcribed as つ゚ has been confirmed.

During the Edo period, some tōon literary materials used this kana to transcribe the Chinese syllable /tu/. This is no longer common today, as とぅ is preferred for all transcriptions of /tu/ instead.
