Reduplication of onomatopoeic root どき (doki), unattested in isolation. Reduplicated form どきどき (dokidoki) first attested in 1700.[1]

Similar, but apparently unrelated, to Sino-Japanese term 動悸 (dōki, heartbeat; palpitation). That term is not attested until 1721.[2]
