Etymology

表六(ひょうろく) (hyōroku, idiot, fool) + (だま) (dama, spherical object suffix). The first component supposedly derives from the way that a turtle will foolishly keep its six () limbs (head, four limbs, and tail) out in the open () even in the face of danger; the second component is added as a suffix by analogy with 悪玉(あくだま) (akudama, bad character) and 善玉(ぜんだま) (zendama, good character).[1]
