ダブる

Blend of ダブル (daburu, derived from English double) + る (-ru).

1. (informal) to be doubled, be repeated
   • 2007, Kaneko Yukiko, Shinpuru ni katazukete mainichi sukkiri kokochiyoku kurasu, page 60:

     そんな私(わたし)は家(いえ)の中(なか)で使(つか)うものもまた、「約(やく)分(ぶん)」したがる傾(けい)向(こう)がある。つまり、「これは、あれと機(き)能(のう)がダブるから、要(い)らないんじゃ?」などと、モノをなるべく減(へ)らそう減(へ)らそうとする性(せい)癖(へき)である。

     Sonna watashi wa ie no naka de tsukau mono mo mata, “yakubun” shitagaru keikō ga aru. Tsumari,“kore wa, are to kinō ga daburu kara, iranai n ja?” nado to, mono o naru beku herasō herasō to suru seiheki dearu.

     For me, I have an inclination to “reduce to lowest terms” the equipment I use around the house. In other words, I have a propensity to think, “Since this repeats the function of that, do I really want it?” and so to reduce and reduce stuff as much as possible.

2. (informal) to overlap; to happen at the same time

   Synonym: 重なる (kasanaru)

   今年(ことし)には敬(けい)老(ろう)の日(ひ)が日(にち)曜(よう)日(び)にダブる。

   Kotoshi ni wa Keirō no Hi ga Nichiyōbi ni daburu.

   This year Respect for the Aged Day falls on a Sunday.

3. (informal, education) to repeat a school year, school grade; to repeat a course

   Synonym: 留年 (ryūnen)

     しかし、公(こう)立(りつ)学(がく)では考(かんが)えられないくらい進(しん)級(きゅう)がきびしく、毎(まい)年(とし)３０～４０( ３０ ～ ４０)人(にん)（５％程(てい)度(ど)）が留(りゅう)年(ねん)する。怠(なま)けているとダブる、というシステムなのだ。

     Shikashi, kōritsu gaku de wa kangaerarenai kurai shinkyū ga kibishiku, maitoshi ３０ ~ ４０-nin (５% teido) ga ryūnen suru. Namaketeiru to daburu, to iu shisutemu nano da.

     But standards for promotion at the public school are almost unimaginably strict, with 30 to 40 people (about five percent) having to repeat a grade every year. You can call it a “be idle and do double” system.
