Compound of (, borax) +‎ (so, element).[1][2] First used by Ishiguro Tadanori in Kagaku Kunmō in 1870,[3] probably from (ほう)(しゃ)() (hōshaso) in Seimi Kaisō by Udagawa Yōan, which is a calque of Dutch boraxstof.
