Etymology

Compound of 南蛮 (nanban, southern barbarians, in reference to the Spanish and Portuguese traders of the 1500s-1600s) +‎ 煙管 (kiseru, pipe),[1][2] perhaps from the way that the flower and stem are shaped roughly like a European smoking pipe. The kiseru changes to giseru as an instance of rendaku (連濁).

First attested in the 日本植物名彙 (Nihon Shokubutsu Meii, Japanese Plant Names), a reference work from 1884.[1]
