From Old Japanese. First attested in the Kojiki of 712 CE.[1] Ultimately from Proto-Japonic *atarasi. Cognate with Proto-Ryukyuan *atarasi (whence Okinawan 可惜しゃん (atarashan) and Yonaguni 新さん (atarasan, new)).
