Etymology
- Cholon
- An Chi (2016) critiques the proposal that 堤岸 means literally "embankment" (e.g. by Chen Zhenghong, 2011[1]) as arising from folk etymology; he points to the variant form 提岸 and proposes instead that both come from Vietnamese Sài Gòn[2] (whence also Cantonese 西貢 / 西贡 (sai1 gung3)[3]).
- See Sài Gòn for further etymology.
