Shift from 足んぬ (tannu),^{[1][2][3][4][5]} itself a shift in pronunciation from 足りぬ (tarinu):^[1] 足(た)り (tari, 連(れん)用(よう)形(けい) (ren'yōkei, “stem or continuative form”) of the verb 足(た)りる (tariru, “to be enough”)) + ぬ (nu, “-ed”, Classical Japanese perfective).

The kanji form is ateji (当て字).^[1][2][3][4] Its regular 音読み (on'yomi), かんのう (kannō), contaminated the reading たんぬ (tannu), shifting the pronunciation to たんのう (tannō) and giving it the sense “proficient, skilled”.^[1][2][3][4]
