First attested in the early 9th century. Originally 辭 / 辞 (cí) in place of 詞 / 词 (cí)
子之中棄,天脫馽羈;玉佩瓊琚,大放厥辭。富貴無能,磨滅誰紀? [Literary Chinese, trad.]
子之中弃,天脱𱅁羁;玉佩琼琚,大放厥辞。富贵无能,磨灭谁纪? [Literary Chinese, simp.]- From: c. 819, Han Yu, 《祭柳子厚文》, translated in English as In Memoriam (Liu Tsung-yüan) by H. A. Giles, 1922.
- Zǐ zhī zhōng qì, tiān tuō zhíjī; yù pèi qióng jū, dà fàng jué cí. Fùguì wúnéng, mómiè shúi jì?
- And thou, whom God released in mid-career from earthly bonds, weaver of the jewelled words, thou wilt be remembered when the imbeciles of fortune and place are forgot.
