巴禮

Borrowed from Spanish padre through the Philippines, from Latin patrem, pater, from Proto-Italic *patēr, from Proto-Indo-European *ph₂tḗr. Compare Tagalog pari, Cebuano pari, Chavacano padre.

2. (Taiwanese Hokkien, historical, possibly obsolete, archaic or dated) Roman Catholic missionary

• Some sources, particularly Douglas (1873) and Ogawa (1932), record that the Roman Catholic padre/priest father, usually Spanish friars from Manila during the Spanish colonial era of the Philippines, was often said to have been "an overbearing domineering man, who is always correcting others, but won't take correction himself (lit. a Manila padre)."
