師子

1. Original form of 獅子／狮子 (shīzi).

     Shīzi xíng sì hǔ, zhènghuáng, yǒu rán'ér, wěiduān róngmáo dà rú dǒu.

     The lion is similar to the tiger, pure yellow, with a long mane, and a tuft on its tail which is as big as a bushel. (translated by Behr, 2004b)

     Niú, lǘ, xiàng, mǎ, shǐ, quǎn, hú, láng, shīzǐ, hóu, yuán, fán cǐ máoqún, lì wú wèi dàn, dànzhě bǐchǐ, zhòng suǒhuì'è, píngjū guōwài, xī jì rénjiān.

     The meat of such animals as oxen, donkeys, elephants, horses, pigs, dogs, foxes, wolves, lions, monkeys, and apes is not to be eaten, as a rule. Those who eat the meat of such animals are despised and detested by the general public and the offenders are expelled to the outskirts of the city; they rarely show themselves among the people.
