Etymology

Compound of (haji, shame, embarrassment) +‎ 知らず (shirazu, not knowing, the negative 連用形 (ren'yōkei, continuative form) of verb 知る shiru, “to know”).[1][2]

The ren'yōkei can only be followed by another verb or adjective, so this was followed in classical Japanese by auxiliary verb なる (naru), abbreviated from (ni, particle) + ある (aru, to be). This further abbreviated to the particle (na) in modern Japanese to result in the na-adjective form.
