Japanese
Etymology 1
*/bunsipu/ → /bunɕiɸu/ → /bunɕiu/ → /bunɕuː/
From Middle Chinese 文集 (MC mjun dzip). The kan'on, so a relatively more recent borrowing than the monjū reading. Compare modern Min Nan reading 文集 (bûn-chi̍p).
The spelling appears as early as the late 900s. However, the reading at that time is uncertain, and may have been either bunshū or monjū.[1]
Pronunciation
Noun
文集 • (bunshū) ←ぶんしふ (bunsifu)?
- an anthology (collection of written works)
Derived terms
Proper noun
文集 • (Bunshū) ←ぶんしふ (Bunsifu)?
- (rare) Short for 白氏文集 (Hakushi Bunshū): a collection of Chinese poetry completed in 845 CE
Etymology 2
*/monzipu/ → /monʑiɸu/ → /monʑiu/ → /mond͡ʑuː/
Abbreviation of 白氏文集 (Hakushi Monjū), in turn from 白氏文集 (MC baek dzyeX mjun dzip). The goon, so presumably an older borrowing. However, research since the 1980s suggests that the Monjū reading may have been a hypercorrection arising during the Meiji Period, and that the title was actually read as Bunshū before then.[5]
This reading appears to be archaic.
Pronunciation
Proper noun
文集 • (Monjū) ←もんじふ (Monzifu)?
- (archaic, possibly obsolete) Short for 白氏文集 (Hakushi Monjū): a collection of Chinese poetry completed in 845 CE
