A sieve next to an axe; its original meaning was "to divide/break with an axe" and, according to Xu Shen, it was synonym of 析. The original meaning is still preserved in the character 撕.

Cognate with 此 (OC *sʰeʔ, “this”) (Schuessler, 2007).

STEDT compares 此 (OC *sʰeʔ) and 斯 (OC *se) to Proto-Tani *si (“this”).
