Etymology
/ɕiraki koto/ → /ɕiraɡi koto/ → /ɕiraɡiɡoto/
From Old Japanese. First mentioned in a text from 756 CE.[1]
Derived as a compound of 新羅 (Shiragi, “Silla”) + 琴 (koto, “koto, Japanese zither”).[1][2][3][4][5]
Appears in the oldest sources without any voicing as しらきこと (Shiraki koto), later attested in 1678 with partial voicing as しらぎこと (Shiragi koto).[1] In modern usage, both portions include voicing, and the koto changes to goto as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
