Glyph origin

Phono-semantic compound (形聲 / 形声, OC *bral): semantic (sick) + phonetic (OC *bral) – sick and tired.

Etymology

Disputed; which etymology to believe hinges entirely on whether or not to reconstruct a medial -r- in Old Chinese.

  • If a medial -r- is not reconstructed, STEDT and Schuessler relate this to Proto-Tibeto-Burman *bal (tired; thirsty), whence Burmese ပန်း (pan:, to be tired) (STEDT; Schuessler, 2007; Hill, 2019)
  • Hill (2014), who reconstructs a medial -r-, maintained a connection to Tibetan བརྒྱལ (brgyal, to faint), though as seen in Hill (2019), he appears to have abandoned this connection in favor of the former theory.
