Etymology
Coined in Japan as a 国字 (kokuji, “national (i.e. coined-in-Japan) character”),[1][2][3] from elements 疒 (“illness”, radical) + 積 (“accumulation”). The original sense was menstrual cramps, and the character was coined from the way that this physical pain happens a lot over time.[1]
The reading comes from the goon reading shaku of constituent part 積.[1]
First cited in 1593.[1]
