Renamed from 赤寮 (ciah4 liao5) during the Qing era after irrigation was introduced.[1]

Teochew linguist Lin Lunlun 林倫倫 writes instead that the original name was 粟寮 (ciah4 liao5, literally grain hut), also written as 赤寮 (ciah4 liao5), and that 穀饒 / 谷饶 (gog4 riao5, literally grain + plentiful) is a roughly synonymous + homophonous modification of the original name.[2]
