From Old Japanese pako. First attested in the Nihon Shoki of 720 CE. In turn, from Proto-Japonic *pako.
This term originally referred to a kind of wicker basket or box introduced from continental Asia, and the word is thought to be a borrowing from, or cognate with, a predecessor form of modern Korean 바구니 (baguni, “basket”). Compare Middle Korean 바고니〮 (pàkwòní).
