Attested since the Yuan dynasty. Zhengzhang (2002) proposes that it comes from (OC *poːwɢ, “embroidered collar”). Sheng (2010) points out that it is unlikely because of the rare literary usage of in the literature compared to the explosive vernacular usage of since the Yuan dynasty; he instead proposes that it may be from Proto-Turkic *bōń (neck), but also see Wang (2016) and Sun and Du (2022) for some difficulties with the Turkic hypothesis.
