From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *boj (Benedict, 1972 ; Schuessler, 2007 ).
Cognate with Burmese ဗွေ ( bwe , “ whorl; cowlick ” ) , Jingpho ( boi , “ to have a cowlick ” ) ; Tibetan བལ། ( bal , “ wool ” ) is related either to this or 綿 (OC - ) ~ 棉 (OC *men , “cotton”).
