Usage notes

  • Unlike English this, 這個这个 (zhège) in Mandarin is not usually used for units of time such as (nián), (tiān) and (). Rather, (jīn) and (běn) are used. Some common examples include 今晚 (jīnwǎn, “tonight”), 今天 (jīntiān, “today”) and 今年 (jīnnián, “this year”). However, 這個这个 (zhège) can be used with (yuè) - 這個/这个 (zhège yuè) - or more formally 本月 (běnyuè), as well as 星期 (xīngqī) - 這個星期/这个星期 (zhège xīngqī).
  • For Hokkien, Douglas (1873/1899) notes that /--dê is sometimes heard after final ⟨-t⟩, such as with this term, chit-ê / chit-le / chit-lê / chí-lê > chit-dê / chit-de / chid-dê / chí-dê, although modern Pe̍h-ōe-jī (POJ) does not use the letter ⟨D⟩.
