From Chinese 函數/函数 (hánshù, “mathematical function”),[1] itself first used in print in 1859 in Li Shanlan's Chinese translation of Elias Loomis's Elements of Analytical Geometry and of the Differential and Integral Calculus. 関 is a daiyōji replacing 函.
