The second element is the realis adnominal form of 크다 (khú-tá, to be large) and the third element is Sino-Korean () (twong, district), but the first syllable is unclear.

It has been proposed that the first syllable stemmed from a mistaken Sino-Korean reading of the character (ka, to add; more) which had originally been intended as a logogram for Korean (te, more), and thus that the original, purely native name was 큰〮골〯 (Tè Khún Kwǒl, literally "the Bigger Town"). This is speculative, however.
