First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean 머기〮다〮 (Yale: mèkí-tá).

먹 (meok-, “to eat”) + 이 (-i-, causative suffix) + 다 (-da, suffix conventionally given for citation forms).
