바꾸다

Of native Korean origin. First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean 밧고〮다〮 (Yale: pàskwó-tá).

1. to change ; to replace with something else

   전구를 바꾸어 끼우다

   jeon'gu-reul bakkueo kkiuda

   to change a lightbulb

2. to exchange ; to give and receive something else in return

   지폐를 잔돈으로 바꾸다

   jipye-reul jandon-euro bakkuda

   to exchange notes (paper currency) for coins

3. to change; to make changes; to modify

   원고의 내용을 많이 바꾸어야겠다.

   Won'go-ui naeyong-eul mani bakkueoyagetda.

   will have to make a lot of changes to the manuscript.

   그만 좀 바꿔라. 어차피 다 기록에 남는다.

   Geuman jom bakkwora. Eochapi da girog-e namneunda.

4. to put (somebody) on (on the phone)

   수빈 씨 좀 바꿔 주세요.

   Subin ssi jom bakkwo juseyo.

   I'll put (her) on.

   전화 바꿨습니다.

   Jeonhwa bakkwotseumnida.

   I am on the phone. (after somebody put them on)
