First attested in the Gugeupbang eonhae (救急方諺解 / 구급방언해), 1466, as Middle Korean 빈혀 (Yale: pìnhyè).
Considered to be a compound of Sino-Korean word 빈 (鬢, bin, “hair on temples”) and native word 혀 (hyeo, “tongue”), from Hanja form 鬢舌 in the old literature.
Cognate with Jeju 빈네 (binne).
